who we are
Leading international storytellers | providers of skills to the film & tv industry
Cinemateca is a new voice in independent filmmaking and media production training. Embedded within the UK’s burgeoning media scene, it is dedicated to engaging and engaged narrative films, alongside the development of the talent pipeline.
As an independent production house, the company focuses on telling essential stories with international appeal, working across feature productions, high-end television, and music-film integrations.
Cinemateca is also the go-to place for film and media skills training, above and below the line, through its award-wining suite of short courses, from supporting entry-level production assistants to nurturing tomorrow’s industry leaders.
Helping diverse talent find its voice within visual storytelling is central to the mission of Cinemateca as both a production house and an accredited training provider. A key focus for the company is providing transformative opportunities for working class talent otherwise excluded from the film industry.
Cinemateca is a partnership between four multi-award-winning filmmakers who in the last two years have screened features at Cannes, Berlin, Locarno, and Buenos Aires: Carl Hunter (Sometimes Always Never, Grow Your Own), Martin McQuillan (Hamlet Within, Oxi: An Act of Resistance), Roz Di Caprio (Northern Doc Fund winner 2024), and Karen Appleton (formerly LA Productions).
In 2022, they were presented with the UK government’s national award for Innovation in the Training of Young People at a ceremony with the prime minister. The Cinemateca team has previously provided short courses for the BFI, Liverpool City Region Authority, UNESCO City of Music, the Department for Work and Pensions, and the Department for Education
